Thumb Drive

上个星期换了一个 1 GB 的 thumb drive, 之前我用的是 486MB 的。昨天晚上，当我回到家里将 thumb drive 插进电脑准备继续工作时，赫然发现有一个最主要的 folder 不见了，一个装了这个学期上课材料的 folder 无法打开，还有一些零散的各种文件也消失了！

后来，在 B 的协助之下，终于将这些原本消失的 files 找回来，不过，file extensions were all corupted, file names were gone. all i got was more than 2000 data files which were numerically named. what i could do was to try changing the extension to .doc, .pdf, .jpg, etc. when i got the correct file extension, it will open nicely. but there were more than 2000 files! 我不可能一个一个尝试，我会发疯的！

还好，我是曾经活过80和90年代的，用电脑是从 DOS 开始，噢，不，说来会泄漏我的年龄，不过，我第一次用电脑，是用 punch card 的呢！那是当我读初级学院的时候，我是全新加坡电脑课程第一次介绍到 JC 时的第一批读 A level Computer Science 的学生。hehe. 哪一年啊？猜中没有奖。

所以，我一直都有存 backup copy 的习惯，即使今天的电脑已经看来那么 reliable 的时代。真的那么 reliable 吗？我就那么 suay, 碰上 thumb drive 里的文件 corupted! 不过，想到我前两天还做了 backup, 心里就踏实多了。而今天上讲堂课的 ppt 也在我办公室电脑的 desktop 上存了一份。要不然，我连课都不必上了！heng ah! 不过，我的学生可能就觉得 buay heng ah!

今天，我找回那支原本准备淘汰的 486 thumb drive, 重新使用。经过这场虚惊，看来我会更勤于存后备档案了。
